The iconic Mallorcan road from Sóller to Palma was originally conceived by engineers Lorenzo Abrines and Juan Sora. The first road was built in 1874; it was narrow, with 70 tight curves, and suitable only for carriages. Over time, it was adapted for vehicular traffic. The narrow and winding passage through the Coll pass was bypassed by a tunnel almost 3 km long, which opened to traffic in 1997.
