Where to Stay in Mallorca for Road Cycling

Seven road-cycling bases compared side by side: which climbs start nearby, how flat or mountainous the riding is, how far from the airport, and how many bike-rental and repair listings each town has.

The best place to stay in Mallorca for cycling depends on one trade-off: mountains at the door or easy access and services. The north (Pollença, Alcúdia) and Sóller put you beside the Serra de Tramuntana. Palma gives you the airport and the biggest bike-shop scene. The east and south are flatter, quieter and warmer in the shoulder months, but the big climbs are a drive away. For the rest of the trip (climbs, routes and live road closures), see our Mallorca cycling guide.

Not sure which base fits your trip? The base finder ranks these towns from our climb, route, rental and hotel data once you tell it your month, daily riding time, terrain and who is coming. Rather book a package with bikes, routes and hotel arranged? Compare Mallorca cycling holiday operators.

Port de Pollença and Pollença: the classic base

Pollença is the default answer for a reason. The bay is flat for warm-ups and recovery rides, and the Tramuntana begins at the edge of town. Cap de Formentor (18.5 km, 3.5% average) is a dawn ride from the hotel. Coll de Femenia (7.3 km, 5.5%) and the Pollença to Lluc traverse open the interior, while Puig Major and Sa Calobra are big-day loops.

Services are the deepest outside Palma: 18 rental and 8 repair listings, plus 20 hotels in the directory. See bike rentals in Pollença, repair shops and hotels in Pollença. The catch is crowds in March to May, when rooms and rental frames go first. Details in the Pollença base guide.

Alcúdia and Playa de Muro: flat, easy and well served

Alcúdia suits groups with mixed ability. You roll out onto flat roads and the Albufera plain, and the hills are an optional day. Cap des Pinar (5.7 km, 4.5%) and Coll de sa Creueta are the local climbs. Reaching Femenia or Lluc means a longer ride out first, so mountain-focused riders may prefer Pollença.

This is the best-stocked flat base: 19 rental and 6 repair listings in Alcúdia, plus 7 and 5 in neighbouring Muro, which covers Playa de Muro. Alcúdia also has the largest hotel list in the north, 38 in the directory. See Alcúdia rentals, Muro rentals and hotels in Alcúdia. More in the Alcúdia guide.

Port de Sóller and Sóller: mountains on every side

Sóller sits in a valley ringed by the Tramuntana, so there is no flat warm-up. Coll de Sóller (7.5 km, 6%) is the way in from Palma, and Coll d’Honor, Puig Major and Sa Calobra start from this side of the range. Expect to be climbing within minutes of leaving the hotel.

The trade-off is thin bike services: 3 rental and 2 repair listings against 48 hotels in the directory. Bring your own bike or book a rental well ahead. See rentals in Sóller and hotels in Sóller. The transfer is about 80 minutes. Read the Sóller guide.

Palma: the practical base

Palma is 9 km from the airport and has 158 rental and 28 repair listings, far more than any other town. Flat coast rides run along the bay, and Galilea (4.2 km, 6.5%), Randa (5.1 km, 6.5%) and Coll de Sóller are within reach. The cost is urban riding before the quiet roads begin, and the big Tramuntana climbs need a longer day.

Good for four-night trips, riders collecting a hire bike, or couples who want a city around the cycling. See Palma rentals, repair, hotels in Palma and the Palma guide.

Cala Millor and the east: flat and quiet

The east is rolling rather than mountainous. Sant Salvador (4.8 km, 8% average) is the steep local test, with Artà and Capdepera hill roads for variety. The Tramuntana is a long way off, which is the point: roads are quieter and the east is often a gentler choice in the cooler months.

Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, which includes Cala Millor, lists 18 rental shops but no repair shop in our data. Nearby Capdepera adds 11 rental, 4 repair and 5 hotel listings. See Sant Llorenç rentals, Capdepera repair and hotels in Capdepera. It is the longest transfer here, about 108 minutes.

Colònia de Sant Jordi and the south: flat endurance miles

The south is Mallorca’s flattest and most exposed corner, so wind decides the day. It suits endurance riding and groups where not everyone climbs. Sant Salvador near Felanitx is the closest real climb, and the Es Pla roads lie inland, covered in the Es Pla guide.

Services are modest: 6 rental listings in Santanyí, 4 in Campos. Check Santanyí rentals and hotels in Santanyí, or hotels in Campos. Plan on a rental or your own bike rather than walking into a shop.

Santa Ponsa and Andratx: the quiet west

Andratx is the start of the Andratx to Estellencs coast road (19 km, 3%, 500 m of climbing), a route that feels remote yet is still close to Palma. Coll de sa Gramola and Cap de Cala Figuera add shorter options. Fewer cyclists means fewer cyclist-specific hotels.

Services are limited here: 1 repair listing in Andratx and no rental listings, so Santa Ponsa riders often fetch bikes from Palma. Consider this base if you have your own bike. See the Andratx town page and the full hotel directory.

How to choose

  • Climbing is the point: Pollença, then Sóller.
  • Mixed-ability group: Alcúdia.
  • Short trip, hire bike: Palma.
  • Quiet, flat, shoulder season: Cala Millor or the south.
  • Own bike, avoiding crowds: Andratx.

Timing matters as much as the base: Sa Calobra’s best months in our data are March to May and October to November. See the best time to cycle in Mallorca and whether to bring or rent a bike.
